Meet Andrea: Confident Mother and Mrs. America Contestant
For Andrea, hearing loss was part of her family’s history. Two of her ancestors actually met at a school for the deaf, fell in love and later married. From that point, hearing loss was in her genes, and Andrea inherited a progressive form of sensorineural hearing loss. A mother to two small children, she used to worry at night that she would not hear them if they woke up. With Esteem, Andrea feels like a better parent and gained so much confidence that she even ran for Mrs. Nebraska and Mrs. America.
Family History Catches Up at A Young Age
Andrea’s personal journey with hearing loss began while she was in college, but her family’s history began six generations before when her ancestors met and fell in love at a school for the deaf. Andrea noticed the beginnings of the progressive sensorineural hearing loss when she was unable to understand the professor speaking at the front of the class.
She bought her first pair of hearing aids at 22, but quickly became unsatisfied with the result. “My hearing aids made everything loud and unnatural,” said Andrea. “Especially when I was out with friends or in a group setting, the amplified background noise drowned out everyone’s voices.” With a lifetime ahead of her, Andrea began the exhaustive search for a better hearing alternative.
Withdrawn from Family and Friends
Andrea’s hearing loss kept her from living the life she always wanted. Rather than attending events with friends and family, she instead opted to stay at home due to feeling self-conscious and worrying that her hearing loss would isolate her from loved ones. “People get tired of you asking them to repeat themselves,” she said. “I eventually decided it was easier to just stay at home.”
A Hearing Alternative Ahead of Its Time
Andrea’s older brother, who also struggled with sensorineural hearing loss, was the first member of her family to discover Esteem. After doing his research and talking with Andrea about Esteem, they were both shocked to learn that a completely implantable device was already available for use. “We just couldn’t believe it,” said Andrea. “We thought that something like this would be available sometime in our lifetime, but not this soon.”
Immediately sold on the idea of a permanent hearing solution, Andrea and her brother received the Esteem implant only one month apart from each other and never looked back.
A More Confident, Engaged Mother
With Esteem, Andrea’s confidence has dramatically increased, as has the amount of quality time she spends with her husband and two young children. “I feel like a better mom with this implant,” said Andrea. “I can take my kids to the beach and feel safe. We can get in the water and I can hear the crispness of the waves crashing.”
Andrea used to worry she would be unable to hear her children wake in the middle of the night. With Esteem, she sleeps comfortably knowing her children are safe at all times of the day.
Not only has Andrea gained confidence as a mother, but she has also found time to become more outgoing, even running for Mrs. Nebraska and placing fourth runner-up at Mrs. America. “I would never have been able to get up in front of a crowd of people and speak like I did at Mrs. America,” she said. “All of this wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t receive the Esteem implant. It has been absolutely incredible.”
